Goal Management

Project GPS

Project GPS is a collaboration between Thrive Foundation and the Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development (IARYD) at Tufts University, to provide useful tools to grow goal-directed behavior. The ground-breaking tools found in this section include GPS manuals and short videos showing young adults who are GPS exemplars.

The GPS manuals describe the background research on goal management and positive youth development, and provide mentors with activities to develop GPS skills.

Exemplar Videos highlight young people who have demonstrated GPS skill mastery. Discussion guides about each Exemplar ignite reflection and conversation about the videos.

Three books delineate these tools. Book One is the background and research, Book Two has the rubrics, and Book Three provides activities and videos. Here are highlights:

  • Book 1: Chapters 1-2 include the background research on goal management and positive youth development.
  • Book 2: Chapters 1-4 include instructions for the mentor to introduce rubrics to young people and the rubrics.
  • Book 3: Chapters 1-6 provide mentors with activities to develop GPS skills that have been identified as areas for growth.
  • Book 3: Chapters 7-9 include discussion templates for mentor guided conversations about each Exemplar Video.
  • A goal without a plan is just a wish.
